Shut the Box is a traditional tabletop dice game commonly enjoyed by two or more players. Here's a concise overview of how to play:

  1. Setup: Each player starts their turn with all the number tiles (usually 1 through 9 or sometimes 1 through 12) visible and standing up.

  2. Objective: The goal of the game is to flip down (or "shut") all the tiles on your turn.

  3. Turns: Players take turns rolling two dice.

  4. Tile Selection: After rolling the dice, the player adds up the pips (dots) on the dice and may choose any combination of tiles that equals the sum of the dice.

  5. Flipping Tiles: The player then flips down the selected tiles. For example, if they roll a 5 and a 3, they could flip down the tiles for 5, 3, and 8, if those are available. They could also flip down just the 8, or any other combination of tiles that equal 8.

  6. Scoring: The player's score for that turn is the sum of the tiles they flipped down. For example, if they flipped down 5, 3, and 8, their score would be 16.

  7. Winning: The game continues with players taking turns until one player cannot make a move that matches the sum of the dice. When a player cannot make a move, their turn ends and their score is recorded. The player with the lowest score when all players have taken a turn wins the game.

  8. Variations: There are many variations of Shut the Box, including different tile arrangements, scoring methods, and rules about which tiles can be flipped down. These variations can add complexity and strategy to the game.
